Description

Product Description – XT Series Soldering Tips for Weller WSD121

Precision Tips for Weller WSD121 Stations

Engineered for the Weller WSD121 soldering station, these XT series tips deliver consistent heat transfer and reliable performance for lead‑free and leaded soldering applications. Available in multiple lengths (approx. 32–40mm), they offer flexibility for standard and extended‑reach PCB access.

Material & Plating

Each tip features a C1100 oxygen‑free copper core (copper content ≥ 99.90%) with thermal conductivity of approximately 380–400 W/(m·K). Formed by cold heading, the core offers about 15% higher thermal conductivity than machined alternatives, ensuring rapid heat delivery.

The 72‑hour nano‑composite electroplating process applies four functional layers:

Iron layer (12 A/dm²): Dense crystalline structure for superior corrosion and wear resistance. Vickers hardness (HV) is controlled within 400–550 – above 600 may cause brittleness, below 350 results in insufficient wear resistance.

Nickel layer (5 μm): Prevents rust and protects the copper base.

Hard chromium layer (15 A/dm²): Prevents solder creep and maximises oxidation resistance.

Tin layer (12 μm): Pre‑applied to the working end for immediate wettability.

Performance & Compatibility

Long Service Life: Delivers 18,000–35,000 solder joints under standard conditions (350–400°C, proper maintenance). Actual lifespan depends on temperature, flux activity, solder alloy, and handling technique.

Cost‑Effective: Offers 30–50% savings compared to genuine Weller XT tips, with consistent quality across all batches.

Flexible Length Options: Available from approx. 32mm to 40mm – shorter tips offer better control for fine‑pitch work, while longer tips reach past tall components.

Applications

Suitable for electronics repair, PCB rework, prototyping, and technical training. Optimised for lead‑free (SAC305) and leaded soldering processes, with robust plating that withstands higher lead‑free temperatures.

Maintenance & Replacement

To extend tip life:

Clean with a damp sponge or brass wire ball during use.

Apply a solder "tin cap" before powering off.

Use recommended temperatures: 350°C ± 10°C for lead‑free, 320°C ± 10°C for leaded solder.

Never use files or abrasives – these damage the plating.

Replace immediately if you observe:

Pits or holes on the working surface

Solder creeping up the barrel

Significant loss of heating efficiency

Permanent blackening that rejects solder

FAQ

What materials and plating are used in these XT series soldering tips?
We use high-purity copper cores with a multi-layer system: iron plating (wear resistance, quality improvement), chromium plating (solder creep prevention), and an anti-oxidation layer (corrosion resistance). This combination is specifically engineered for lead-free soldering temperatures.

Do you offer custom XT tip shapes, lengths, or plating specifications?
Yes. As a custom soldering tip manufacturer, we can modify tip geometry (chisel, conical, bent, knife, hoof), total length (outside the 37-40mm range), or plating thickness for aggressive flux environments. Provide a drawing, original sample, or intended application – our engineering team will advise. Custom orders require minimum quantity – contact our sales team.

What are the exact lengths available? Will these fit my Weller WSD121 or WP120?
Total length: available from 37mm to 40mm (specify when ordering). Our XT series lead-free soldering tip is compatible with Weller WSD121 stations and WP120 soldering pencils, as well as other Weller stations that accept standard XT series cartridges. Confirm your station's compatibility before ordering.

How does service life compare to original Weller XT tips, especially for lead-free soldering?
Under identical lead-free soldering conditions (350-380°C, continuous use with proper maintenance), our multi-layer plating delivers comparable or longer life – typically 12,000 to 20,000 solder joints depending on tip shape, solder alloy, and flux chemistry. The chromium plating also extends life by preventing tin creep. We recommend a side-by-side trial on your bench or production line to verify performance.

How should we maintain these tips for maximum life in lead-free soldering?

Keep the tip tinned when the iron is idle (use station sleep mode if available)

Clean with brass wire or a damp sponge – avoid abrasive files or tip cleaners

Lead-free solders require higher temperatures – use the lowest effective temperature for your application

Replace immediately if the tip becomes pitted, deformed, or cannot wet properly

Store unused tips in a dry, anti-static container to prevent oxidation

For high-volume repair centers, schedule weekly tip inspections

We supply detailed maintenance guides with bulk orders. For lead-free applications, proper tip tinning is especially critical – we recommend using high-quality lead-free solder wire with active flux.
